Regina live on Morning Becomes Eclectic

Today, Regina Spektor recorded a session on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic with Jason Bentley. Even though Bentley isn’t the most steller interviewer around, he’s kind of a fanboy (fanman?) so it’s pretty cool. You can listen to the show online or download it below.

1. (Intro)
2. The Calculation
3. Eet
4. Machine
5. (Interview)
6. Laughing With
7. Us
8. Blue Lips
9. Samson
10. (Interlude)

12. (Outro)

For the weirdos who naysay the “overproduced” sound of her new album Far, they should appreciate these live stripped down sessions she’s been doing lately. They should put all the whiny “Ugh, she’s not the same anymore. I miss the ooollldddd Reginaaaa” comments to rest. Her voice is spot on and the addition of strings to songs like “Us” is magical.

Kid Harpoon on Steve Lamacq!

With the release of single “Stealing Cars” right around the corner (July 20th!), Kid Harpoon paid a visit to Steve Lamacq’s In New Music We Trust radio show this week. With help from some friends, including Jack Penate, Katie Melua, and Simon Tong, Kid performed “Stealing Cars” and “Burnt Down the House”.

Black Cab Sessions FTW

It’s been over two weeks since I last updated and SO MUCH HAS HAPPENED in the fun world of music, film, and television, but also in my personal life. The most important: I no longer have to fear living in the dumpster behind The Clara and bathing in the Starbucks bathroom next year! And since that inside joke will make sense to only three people, what I’m trying to say is that I’ve found a new apartment in the city and signed a lease. Huzzah!

Alright, back to proper blog business. Considering I have about a dozen half written posts, expect some super updating in the next three days. So much to share, so little time! Let’s begin the fun now, shall we?

If you’ve never heard of the Black Cab Sessions then you’ve been missing out big time. The concept: Musicians with instruments in tow (and a trusty cameraman!) hail a cab, cram into the backseat, and play a song as they get from Point A to Point B in one take. So simple, yet so genius isn’t it?  In two years, the cabs around London have already played host to the likes of Emmy the Great, The Futureheads, Jeffrey Lewis, and the one and only Brian Wilson. The most recent session features Orlando, Hugo, and Felix of The Maccabees squeezing into the backseat armed with guitars and a melodica for a lovely rendition of ‘Love You Better’.

The site has disabled embedding, but you can CHECK OUT THE MACCABEES PERFORM “LOVE YOU BETTER” HERE.
And because I love you: Love You Better (Black Cab Session) audio rip *reuploaded* Let me know if this link dies too.

If you like the Black Cab Sessions, you’re probably going to find La Blogotheque’s Concerts a emporter pretty rad too. Check them out, more great stuff.

New Whale tunes/videos

Noah and the Whale have finished their Club Silencio tour and will soon be coming back to the States to fill our ears and hearts with beautiful folk-influcenced goodness. In the meantime, you can enjoy a recent session with Maps the band recorded before a gig in Italy, which includes a three-part interview and performances of ‘Mary’ and ‘My Door is Always Open’ (new song!).

You can find the video for their performance of ‘Mary’ right here.

Listen to the interview and download their performances FOR FREE right over here

The interview is in English and Italian, with the boys talking about their name, good movies they’ve seen recently (some very good choices, imo), finishing the new album and making a film to accompany the new songs, as well as talking about being on the soundtrack for a new film premiering at the Cannes Film Festival this year. It’s a ten minute interview, definitely listen if you’ve got the chance!
