FAVORITE SONGS OF 2010

BLOOD RED SHOES“Heartsink”

To say I was obsessed with this song would be a total understatement. It’s like the “ADHD” of Fire Like This.

NETHERFRIENDS“Bret Easton Ellis Novel”

This summer, I discovered Netherfriends via Loup Loop Press and fell in love with their garage-y, lo-fi pop sounds. Though I may have forgotten to post about them, “Bret Easton Ellis Novel” was on repeat for most of summer. Good times.

GOLDEN AGES“Everything Will Be Alright”

Synthesizer-fueled, electro-pop. What more could I ask for on long morning drives?

MYSTERY JETS“Lorna Doone”

My love for Mystery Jets knows no bounds. As the closing track for Serotonin, “Lorna Doone” only makes me all the more excited for what they’re doing next.

THE FUTUREHEADS“Heartbeat Song”

When I saw The Futureheads live (THAT FEELS SO GOOD TO SAY), Barry asked the audience to imagine themselves in the middle of a John Hughes film as they danced to this song. For three minutes, I was Molly Ringwald and it felt great.

SLOW ANIMAL“Dolt Heart”

I can’t say I ever bought into the “chill wave” hype, but this year I definitely discovered some garage bands that knew what was up. Slow Animal were one of those bands and this song sounds best while speeding down the highway with the volume on blast.

CUT COPY“Where I’m Going”

There’s a reason Cut Copy are the owners of the “gods amongst men” tag.

SUMMER CAMP - “Round the Moon”

You know there has to be something special about music that makes you nostalgic about moments you’ve never experienced and times you’ve never lived. Amazing.

WHITE MYSTERY“Powerglove”

When I first heard Chicago’s White Mystery, I was positive I was listening to some garage band from the 70s. But nope, WM are a 20-something brother-sister duo creating heavy, grimey rock like it’s no big thing. “Powerglove” is infectious and the video features a plethora of wild, red-headed Chicago peeps. Good times.

NOAH AND THE WHALE” L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N. (radio version)”

Technically, this song is only a few weeks old but I discovered it earlier in the year through a live YouTube clip. When I heard it then, I got really excited because it sounded so different from anything NATW had done in the past. Fast-forward to a few days ago, the song premiered on Radio 1 and my anticipation for Last Night On Earth officially became insane. But really, would you expect any different from me?

MYSTERY JETS CARE ABOUT THE CHILDREN

Yesterday, I ever-so-subtlety mentioned that Mystery Jets will be returning to Chicago in January as part of the Tomorrow Never Knows music festival. But before we get to enjoy the sights and sounds of Serotonin, the band will play a special gig on November 16th benefiting the Variety Club Children’s Charity, an organization that has been helping sick, disabled and disadvantaged children and young people for more than sixty years.

The show will take place at London’s Blues Kitchen and will feature an acoustic (!!) set from Mystery Jets with support from Rodeo Massacre. The Maccabees’ Orlando Weeks and Hits Don’t Hurt will also be on site spinning some tunes.

SOUNDS LIKE AN AMAZING TIME, RIGHT?! Well, loads of people thought so too and the show is already sold out. But don’t be too sad, it’s sold out FOR A GREAT CAUSE!

In the meantime, you can catch Mystery Jets as they finish up their current tour around the UK:
Nov 3 Academy 2 Dublin – Dublin
Nov 5 HMV Institute – Birmingham
Nov 6 Anson Rooms – Bristol
Nov 7 The Glee Club – Cardiff
Nov 9 Trent Uni – Nottingham
Nov 10 Brighton Concorde – Brighton
Nov 11 The Roundhouse – London
Nov 16 Blues Kitchen – London

But for the last five years, Schubas (and now sister venue Lincoln Hall too!) have presented TOMORROW NEVER KNOWS, a winter music festival showcasing some of the best up-and-coming bands from around the world. Mystery Jets overloaaaad!

First things first, visit Mystery Jets’ official Myspace and listen to Serotonin bonus track “Make Up Your Mind”!! It’s fantastic and guaranteed to get stuck in your head. But you have to hurry because it will only be available until MONDAY. You’ve been warned.

Second, watch the M’jets perform “Serotonin” from a recent Serotonin Session they recorded in London. Three more videos from the session will be released soon.

Third, if you’re in a country that Pocket TV does not hate, you can head on over here and watch an interview, performance of “Dreaming of Another World” and a cover of Gorillaz’ “On Melancholy Hill.” If you’re like me and Pocket TV hates your country and you’ve been trying to find a loophole for the last two days but nothing’s come up, then you’re shit out of luck. (If you *have* found a loophole, let a girl know mkay?)

Fourth, Mystery Jets are part of a crazy new ad campaign for Stella Artois. Watch their advert HERE!

Fifth, there’s apparently a world tour in the works that includes dates in America. Whether “America” means Chicago is yet to be determined. Watch this space.

Mystery Jets session with Steve Lamacq

This week, some of my favorite people in the world stopped by the BBC’s Maida Vale studios to record a session for Steve Lamacq’s 6 Music show. Those people were, of course, Mystery Jets.

The boys had a fun chat with Lamacq about recording their new album Serotonin (released July 5th UK/July 13th US via Rough Trade) and performed stellar versions of ‘Flash a Hungry Smile’ and ‘Dreaming of Another World’.

LISTEN TO THE SESSION ONLINE NOW
(starts around 02:07:00)

The broadcast will be available for free online streaming until Monday May 31st, so go listen before you miss out! And not to worry fellow North American fans, the online player works for us too!

You can expect a video shortly for their upcoming single ‘Dreaming of Another World’. In the meantime, check out some sweet video stills here, listen to the tune online, and pre-order the album because you know it’s going to be AMAZING.
