New Regina Spektor album!!!

The one and only Regina Spektor has finally revealed details about her upcoming album. Oh yes, it is coming. Let’s all take a moment and jump around in glee. Yes, glee. That is what you should feel at the sight of this news. That’s what I feel, at least.

Slated for a June 2009 release, Far will be produced by David Kahne (who produced Begin to Hope), Mike Elizondo, Garret “Jacknife” Lee, and Jeff Lynne.

There’s an interview with Spektor about the new album and producer dream-team over at Pitchfork.com.

Pitchfork: On the record, you worked with four producers with pretty different styles: Jeff Lynne, Mike Elizondo, “Jacknife” Lee, and David Kahne. Were you worried about creating a cohesive sound?

Regina Spektor: That question never entered my mind. I just thought, “I’ll work with a few producers, learn from each one, and I’ll have a record.” I’m pretty much stuck sounding like myself so it’s going to be cohesive in a way. And matching producers with songs was done kind of thoughtlessly– it wasn’t like I was sitting there thinking, “Well, this person would make more sense with this song.” I didn’t do research or anything like that. It’s almost like throwing stuff on the floor and seeing how it lands, you know?

Pitchfork: So you didn’t have any sort of grand scheme in mind, necessarily.

RS: I’d like to say I did but I really didn’t. With novels or operas or other grand works of art I’m like, “Wow, how the fuck did you do that?” I’m much more on the level of understanding how someone can draw a picture or write a poem or short story. I’m into immediate gratification. I have enough of an attention span to follow through on one concept…and then I’m bored. If artists were machines, then I’m just a different kind of machine.

Pitchfork: So if you were a machine you’d be, like, a toaster?

RS: [makes ding sound] Yeah, I’d probably be a toaster [laughs]. Actually, I’d be a toaster oven because they’re more versatile. And I like making grilled cheese.

Check out the rest of the interview (more good bits of Regina being funny) right here. For those of you short on time (or perhaps just lazy?), the interview mentions “Genius Next Door”(!!!!!!!!), “Folding Chair”(!!!!!!), and “The Wallet”(!!!!!!!!) as album contenders!! The beauty of new Regina Spektor albums is not only getting some new material (“The Calculation”?), but also getting songs that we’ve all loved as bootlegs for years as proper studio recordings.

According to a new blog post, Spektor also has plans to play summer festivals upon the release of Far, as well as tour the UK and Europe before hitting up the U.S. and Canada in the fall.

Oh sweet excitement!

i can’t wait for her new album as well. i read in another article that Blue Lips “might” be on it as well! you know, as much as i like the studio recordings, i love hearing her live too…they’re both good=)

and do u know if her album is going to be released internationally too? Or will it just be in the US?

kylie – ah yes, i think i read about “blue lips” in a rolling stone interview. i’m excited to hear what studio versions of all these classic regina-gems sound like, but the thought of new material is very exciting too. i wholeheartedly agree with you. she is incredible on record, but to see/listen to her live is an absolute EXPERIENCE.

it’s not 100% official yet, but i think it’s safe to assume the album will get an international release because she already has plans to tour UK/Europe in the summer. i’m sure we will get official release dates once we’re closer to June.
